Environmental biotechnology is the latest technological revolution following on the heels of medical, industrial and agricultural biotechnology. EBCRC is one of very few organisations in Australia and globally who are not only researching but also commercialising environmental biotechnology innovations. Environmental biotechnology brings together the multi-disciplinary skills of scientists and engineers in the application of natural and modified biological mechanisms to solve industrial problems. EBCRC has set for itself the challenge of generating at least seven novel technologies or innovations to be adopted by industry over the seven year life of EBCRC. EBCRC has aligned its research and commercial activities across three broad areas: Biofilms, Microbial detection and control and Bioprocesses.

The commercial objectives fall into three areas:

  • short term tangible products or service outcomes
  • long term tangible products or service outcomes
  • exploratory or 'blue sky' products or service outcomes

Each activity builds upon existing expertise or skills within the organisation. EBCRC is actively pursuing commercial partners in fields outside of environmental biotechnology, eg the industrial, agricultural, medical and veterinary areas. It is also targeting global markets and opportunities with the potential for significant returns to EBCRC and its members. EBCRC aims to commercialise discoveries through licensing or spinout companies. EBCRC welcomes enquiries from any industry with interests in biofilm or biofouling control, micro-organism detection needs or with bioprocess problems. Enquiries may be directed to Dr. Brenton Hamdorf (IP and Commercialisation Manager)
