Welcome to Environmental Biotechnology!

Environmental Biotechnology Cooperative Research Centre (EBCRC) develops advanced technologies based on biological systems to improve efficiency and reduce or utilise waste to benefit a wide range of industries and the environment. EBCRC concentrates its research and commercial efforts in three core areas: biofilm prevention and dispersal, rapid in-field microbial detection and control and bioprocesses such as bioremediation and industrial wastewater treatment.

EBCRC brings together the multidisciplinary skills of researchers, engineers and industry participants to bring out novel technologies in environmental, industrial, agricultural, veterinary, mining and medical applications.

EBCRC discovers new biofilm dispersal technology.

Video screengrabCurrent technologies used to deal with biofilms are largely ineffective, costly and based on toxic biocides. EBCRC has discovered a natural cell signalling system that initiates biofilm dispersal in established biofilms and prevents the formation of new biofilms.

This technology will provide significant improvements to many industries in performance and cost. For example it reduces corrosion, operational costs and capital required for equipment and improves efficiency as well as human, animal and environmental health. » Download video [WMV 8.7MB]
